Steve & Rita's Mayan Adventure
Gran Porto Real, Mayan Riviera
February 4-11th, 2006
INTRODUCTION:
Hola and welcome to our Mayan Riviera holiday report page..
We are Steve and Rita and we live in Burlington, Ontario, Canada..
Until now we have never enjoyed the pleasure of a trip "down south" and we enjoyed it so much we wanted to share our experiences with friends and family and other people like us, who have never had a holiday like this and wanted to know where to go and what to expect..
Our adventure started at our local Flight Center Travel Agency Office
This was in September 2005 and we had narrowed our choices down to four different vacation destinations in Cancun, Mexico..
Our plan was to discuss these properties with the travel agent and hopefully make a final decision..
She reviewed all of our properties and said that they were "all very nice, but I'm going to send you to the Mayan Riveira"..Wow!!..We hadn't even looked at the Mayan and we had researched Cancun for months..But the agent was very helpful and she seemed to know exactly what we wanted..We went with her suggestions and by the time we left we had booked our holiday to visit Gran Porto Real in the Mayan Riviera..Time to head home and research our new destination..
Our vacation hosts were Sunwing Airlines and they took care of everything from getting us there to making sure we had fun while we were there by providing a Sunwing Rep right in the hotel and to getting us home
Our vacation package was "All Incusive" and we really thought this was the way to go, especially since we'd never done anything like this before..
This vacation was also a celebration for us of our 20th Wedding Anniversary (in May, but you get the idea)
We were very excited about our holiday and destination right from the start and started to count the days..
All the pictures are thumbnailed so please feel free to click away for larger versions..Hope you enjoy your visit to our little adventure...
DAY 1:
Toronto airport..Our most expensive meal all week..A view above the clouds and our first Mexican bus ride..

We arrived in Mexico around 8:30 pm. We were both a little stressed as we did not really know where to go or what to do. We got sucked in by a “Shark” (time share dude) as we thought he was an airport information guy….They are in uniform and are in a Kiosk type thing in the airport. We extracted ourselves from his grip and found our Sunwing Rep.
A tip for you first time travellers: You get off the plane and go through security..Then you get your bags and go through customs..Which is kind of neat..They have a stop light with a button on it..You press the button..If the green light comes on, you are good to go and if the red light comes on, prepare to have your bags opened up..
From customs you can walk straight out to the street where the buses are..All those Kiosks are just guys selling "time shares" and you should just walk by them all..You will see buses out there and now is the only time you should be looking for your Rep and your bus..
We boarded a luxury coach that transported us to the hotel. We were offered a Cervesa (beer) on the bus and we thought that was odd…..but came to realize that drink in vehicles is the norm there…even walking down the street with a beer is normal!..We were in awe of everything we saw.
We pulled up to the hotel and just stood there staring! It was incredibly beautiful…the architecture was amazing. Huge stone columns every where….Marble, hand crafted, very ornate furnishings….and that was just the lobby. We check in and the bell boy (never had on of those before) put our luggage on a trolly and took us to our room. The room is exactly like the pictures. The shower is big enough to have a party in!
(please see the pics below)
After we checked out the room we wandered out to our balcony…..oh no! We were over looking the construction of another hotel! It was around 10:30 pm and they were still working. We headed down to the front desk and requested a move…..Next morning we move to a room on the first floor that had a view of the ocean and the ferry docks! Every morning we sat out there and had our tea.
We found the Hotel and everyone in it to be the nicest and most helpful people we've ever met..If you have a problem/concern with anything, be sure to talk to someone about it..We found that making customers happy was the hotels main concern..
DAY 2:
Pelicans on the beach, beach lounge, fruity drinks by the pool and a guy in a bird suit??

Sunday we wandered around the hotel, swan in the pool, went for a walk on the beach and then went 2 blocks up to 5th avenue where all the shops are. It is about a 10 block long stretch of cobble stone road that is closed to traffic…so you just wander around checking out what everyone is selling...
We also met with our Sunwing Rep in the lobby of the hotel..Alex(forgot his last name) was awesome..He took care of us right from the start and was always there and ready to answer any questions we had..He is the Rep for a few hotels down there but he always had a binder in his office for you to check his schedule and contact him if needed..
Which includes how to haggle..He said start haggling at 50%..?
You will want to attend this meeting..We were given a pamphlet by our bus driver telling us when the meeting was..
As for the fruity drinks..We tried all types while we were there..You really have to know the names though, 'cause "any suggestions??" doesn't really translate well in Mexican..We managed to find out what other people were drinking and tried them..
Here's our brief list:
- Cerveza(beer)
- Blue Hawaii
- Miami Vice
- Dirty Monkey
- Pina Colada
- Sexo on Del Playa
- Peach Daiquiri’s
- Mango Daiquiri’s
- Fuzzy Navels
And the guy in the bird suit..You guessed it..He does the Bird Dance and other fun numbers..Must have been very hot though??..Although, it was winter in Mexico and we heard a number of locals commenting how this was cold for them..(29 c??)
DAY 3:
1st guided tour..day of snorkling..

Monday we went Snorkeling, first time for both of us. Our Driver, Gabriel and our Guide, Roy (not his real name but his Mexican name is way to long) were great and we had an absolute hoot. First place was a huge inlet off of the ocean that was full of various fish. It was so cool to swim with huge schools of fish….one even nipped my finger.
Then back on the bus, for beer and to travel to a place they call “Magic”….It is a Cenotes that is down in the ground. The road leading to it has only been there for a year and was a rough ride. We climbed down some wooden steps into an under ground cave with stalactites coming down from the ceiling into beautiful clear water. We suited up and Rita offered to carry a flash light (three of us did so that we could see under water as it was a bit dark) little did she know, the light was powered by a propane cylinder that had it’s own life jacket….She could barely get her arm around it!
Then we headed to Tulum beach for a Mexican picnic lunch. We stopped on the way to pick up lunch from this little souvenier type place. There were a few children there and one of the ladies on the bus had a bunch of dollar store toys that she asked our guide to give out. Oh my, it was Xmas for them…They ripped into the packages faster that lightning. One boy, around seven chose this little stuffed bear…The guide offered him a pack of cars instead…but no way he was loving and huggin that bear. Tulum beach is beautiful. There was a rustic shelter and a few benches made out of tree trunks to site on. The lunch, in those metal steam table containers, was YUMMY…tortilla, guacamole, pork, tomatoes, onions, Spaghetti (?) and last but not least Iguana! (not really…it was chicken but Roy said it was Iguana so we played along), oh and more beer (better known as Mexican water). We wandered the beach for a bit after lunch collecting Sea shells then we headed to the last place of the day.
The Cenote was a freshwater one…it was just beautiful….crystal clear water, fish, trees, rocks, turtles. You could jump off of the cliff into the water or go around to the steps….We chose steps. We also saw Scuba divers coming out of an under water cave. We dried up, had a beer and headed home. We had a blast….loved every minute of it.
DAY 4:
walking. shopping and a day in Playa Del Carmen..
note the two pictures here..A fellow hotel guest offered to take our picture and we were so intent on "posing" that we had no idea there was someone behind us..Didn't sense her or anything..We all had a great laugh and took another pic..But we really thought the first one was a keeper too..

A walk along the beach..North from our hotel area.

5th Avenue..electric delivery truck and a machine gun toting security gaurd in front of a Jewellery store
Rita gets her hair braided..Once the negotiations were done we followed the Braidy Lady down this little alley..Steve tells the Braidy Lady that he wants to be next(haha..bald guy humor??..roll eyes)..Braidy Lady cooly suggests extentions!!..hehe..
One thing we did learn..When taking pictures of someone, it's just a polite thing to do..Ask them if its OK..(that includes the machine gun toting security guy)
While Rita gets her hair beaded, Steve checks out the alley..This cute little girl was very interested in anybody(even Steve) walking by and Steve took a digi pic (with her mother's approval) and showed it to her..
So now here's Steve..Standing at the end of this alley..By himself..And he notices this Pink Club at the end of the alley beside this little steak place..
Worth a pic, but he didn't hang around too long..haha
Mexican McDonalds..We didn't go in, but apparently, you can even order beer there..And the "wall "O" booze" in a Drug/Souvenier/Smoke Shop...You can get Prozac, Viagara, Steroids, anything!!..Over the counter!!..(we need to get out more)..

Fifth Avenue runs mainly South from our Hotel location..Picture here is looking north from the Ferry to Cozumel Dock at out Hotel(on Horizon)..
Lunch on 5th..People watching..Rita "leveling" a beer..Steve posing...Rita spotted a guy and his Iguana (at least, thats what she told Steve) across the street and runs over to pet it.

Mexican Corona Factory??...Two trucks and a cement mixer!!
HaHa..Just kidding..Actually, we must say that the entire area we visited was very clean and we often commented on the neat and tidy appearance of everyone..We didn't really expect it to be different than Canada, but the only reason we noticed is because everything seemed so much cleaner in Mexico..
After supper we watched the nightly entertainment at the outdoor stage and then enjoyed the live band in the lobby bar.
It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day..
DAY 5:
A visit to the ruins

Wednesday we went to Chichen Itza, the biggest and most popular Mayan Ruin site in Mexico. It is about a 3 hour drive….Only an hour of which is on the main highway….The rest of the way was soooo bumpy. We were in a big passenger van and it was not so comfortable….To add to the discomfort, many were in desperate need of a "wishing roon"(mayan reference to bathrooms)..including the expectant mother in our group, and there are not any rest stops. We drove through lots of Mayan villages…..The poverty is heartbreaking! Our garden shed (tin shed) looks like a mansion compared to some of the homes there.
A Mayan house was often a square shelter with hammocks hanging in it..
The ruins were incredible, just amazing.
The “GIFT” shops there are rather different….they consist of locals with there wares spread out on blankets up and down the walkways….Beautiful detailed work for a pittance. We then went to lunch in a beautiful outdoor restaurant (all a part of the tour), then on to another under ground Cenotes. We left the hotel at 7 am and did not get back until after 7 pm……I am very glad we did go but I do not think I will do that one again.
Just know that if you go on tours, the roads are very poor and we would suggest a tour bus might be a bit more comfortable.."Best Day" offered most of the tours suggested by our Sunwing Rep, Alex, and they are mostly in vans..
Although uncomfortable, we think you really must take a day and visit the ruins..
Without a guide we really would have missed a lot of fact type stuff
Our guide was very knowledgable and did a great job..
Unfortunately for him, he had to translate in two different languages which made things a bit longer than necessary..Everyone really perked up when we spotted a bunch of Iguanas on some rocks..Dang tourists!!
If you stand in the area of the biggest "pyramid" and clap your hands you hear echos..If you stand right in front and a certain distance away(approximately where we are standing in the 4th picture above), you hear an almost electronic type of beep sound in response to your clap..Hard to explain, but very intrigueing..
We have to admit that after seeing all the poverty on our trip to Chichen Itza and seeing how people live in other parts of the world, we felt very fortunate to be from Canada..And it made "haggling for bargains" a little less of a thrill from then on..
And the thing that amazed us the most is how even though their standard of living was not quite the same as ours, the people of the Yukatan Pininsula are always smiling, happy and cheerful...
We came away having a lot of respect for Mexico and it's people..
DAY 6:
Bus trip to Cancun

Thursday was “Steve Day”…(or at least, it ended up that way)
We booked a trip into Cancun so that we could ride a Wave Runner….At the last minute Rita opted out and told Steve that this was his "thing" and to go ahead by himself..
Thanks Honey...And go ahead he did..We have always wanted one of these machines and even tried to rent one in Canada..But with the new insurance and boating regulations, not many people rent them out anymore..So, Steve always said from the time we booked our holiday, that his first ever ride on a Seadoo(Waverunner, in this case) was going to be in Cancun..He had a blast…And they were so fast..He got it up to 48 MPH...YeeHaa!!
Rita had fun sitting on the patio watching him and drinking beer! He was grinning from ear to ear.

We took a bus up the road to Kuklakan Plaza to have lunch. Then wandered around Cancun….It was a mess still, apparently only 50% there is repaired after Hurricane Wilma (and RITA!!). Hotels with no balconies or windows, walls completely gone, big holes in the walls that are there…Huge piles of glass and rubble…Most of the beach is gone, 2 to 3 feet wide in some places, nothing in others…Big huge beautiful hotels look sort of OK from the front, but head around back to the ocean side and it looks like a bomb went off…..so very sad.
The area we were in was the South end of Cancun between the Lagoon(where Steve Seadoo'd) and the Ocean..We didn't get very far up..Cancun is so much bigger than we thought..So we don't really know about the hotels closer to the top, but where we were, it seemed like a ghost town..
We went back to the hotel and went for a long walk on the beach. On the way back Steve practically peed himself…He started nattering on about something, but real quietly…Took Rita a bit to figure out what was up…………….A topless sunbather…..The look on his face was hilarious! So a Wave Runner and some beautiful scenery made his day.(sorry guys..no pics..sometimes we just have to be a little discreet..We're Canadians, aren't we?..haha)

The Gran Porto Real has two very nice semi-formal restaurants..You are free to use them as you want, but you must dress up and make a reservation..We had a pretty busy schedule, but we did manage to book at the Mexican Cousine called Maria's...This is all still included in your all inclusive package..There was a note on the menu that items with *** marked beside them were subject to an additional charge, but we never actually saw any such items..The food and presentation were awesome..Nothing but great things to say..

On a few evenings local craftsman were allowed to put out a few tables around the hotel pool and sell their wares..The guy seen here was amazing..He'd carve the most amazing designs out of Pesos..Pesos are mostly two colors with an inner circle area and outer rim..He would carve shapes/scenes out of the inner circle(dolphins etc.) and the results were very nicely done..

Every night we were delighted by the very talented shows that were provided on the outdoor hotel stage..This is just an example of one the nights..Make sure you are around in the evening..And dress warm..Its a blustery 16c out there..hehe.
After the outdoor stage show you can move indoors to watch a different band playing most nights..
DAY 7:
A day at the hotel

Friday we stayed at the hotel to sunbathe. Hadn’t really done that yet so we reserved our spot early in the morning, had breaky, then planted our butts…
To reserve your spot you need to get some beach towels from the "beach towel guy" and place them where you want to sit..We thought this was a little rude at first, but soon realized that if you didn't do it, you weren't getting a spot..Its not that the lounges are that full, its just that they all have towels on them..And its actually considered to be ruder to remove them and sit there..
So do yourself a favour and get used to the local customs/practices quickly..(and we hear this is a pretty common practice at most resorts)
Friday, which has now been renamed Fryday..Yes..We got a little burnt on Fryday..But we had fun doing it and thats the important thing..Its February and we have Sunburns..How great is that?(dang tourists)

Found this great view from a 3rd floor open balcony in the hotel..Wish the colours looked as nice as they did when we took the picture..But spectacular, just the same..You can see the Ferry Docks, mentioned earlier, in the distance...

One of Rita's favorite perches..The Swinging Bar

The Michael Jackson Band made an appearance on Friday night on the main stage..These guys were great..Close up, the lead actually looked pretty close to M.J., and from a distance, you would have sworn it was him..The entire troup had all the right moves, but the kid in the white glove definitely stole the show..Very spectacular and just one of the many great shows put on by The Gran Porto Real
DAY 8:
Last, but not least...

As we were eating breakfast, this little guy came strolling through the restaurant..He did a pose for us and then was escorted off the premises by our friendly waiter..

And we spotted this little Gecko(Rita did, actually) on a tree right outside our room/off the balcony..

Spent the final day of a wonderful vacation lieing/sitting/playing around the beach..And drinking..And eating....We had met a couple from Winnipeg, Manitoba who went Parasailing today and thought that maybe that was them in picture 6..Turns out they never really came our direction when they went up, but we thought this was a good picture anyways..
THE HOTEL:

A few different shots..Great looking hotel..We were not dissapointed in any way and really felt like we were sitting in one of the brouchers at the travel agency..

THe Swinging Bar..Great bartender there..Great place to sit if you want someone who knows his drinks and knows how to work a table by keeping everyone amused..(assuming you get him)
Long shot along the beach/ocean side

Main pool bar..There are washrooms underneath that bar..Be careful which stall you decide to sit in..Those little holes near the bottom look right into one of the stalls

The hallway leading to our room..And a great example of perspective..(for you artsy types)

A great view from our balcony..Morning tea and a nice breeze coming off the ocean combined with the rising morning sun..Couldn't ask for a better set-up..

Another great view from the 3rd floor balcony near the swim up bar area..Never really used the swim up bar..Being on the north side of the building it was shaded most of the day and pretty cool..Add to that, the fact that you are sitting on a stool..Barely in the water, but wet, getting a cool breeze off the ocean and drinking ice cold beverages..BBRR!!...
THE ROOM:

Our room was spectacular..Plenty of room, for whatever you might want plenty of room for..Huge shower for plenty of guests??..Not sure..We decided to take these pictures with a "lived in look" on purpose..You can see clean rooms in the brouchers..
FINAL THOUGHT?:
Saturday we went for an early morning walk on 5th ave, then spent the rest of the day under the Palapas on the beach (needed to avoid the sun) and swam in the ocean. We had to be out of our room by noon but did not need to leave for the airport until 5. It was a bitter sweet day.
But the hotel is very accomondating..You keep your "All Inclusive Wristband" until you are ready to leave and they provide you with somewhere to store your bags and somewhere to shower and change etc..
We joked that we were gonna send a telegram home asking for money, 'cause we weren’t coming back.
It never rained once while we were there but, just after we got on the bus for the airport it just POURED!...The bus guide guy said the Mayan Gods were sad that we were leaving.
We were waited on hand and foot all week. The food was yummy and plentiful and so were the drinks.
There was entertainment of some sort going on all day and at 9 pm every night they had Dancers of various nationalities. Plus a different live band in the lobby bar around 10 pm. Friday night they had the Michael Jackson Show….it was incredible…they did “Billy Jean” and “Thriller” (as well as other songs). They were so good we just sat there with our mouths open. On Sunday they did a big Super bowl party….They had a big Screen brought out to the pool area and the big screen TV’s in the lobby bar. They brought out various snacks and keep them replenished when they were empty….They take the “all inclusive plan” to new heights
We ate three big meals a day and there were snacks everywhere. By the last day or two we didn’t eat so much….we were fooded out.
We would go back there in a blink of an eye…It is not the most posh hotel (it’s newer sister hotel is right across the road), but it is beautiful and has a ton of character. The staff was always smiling, helpful and friendly…..We had some amusing language barrier moments, but that just added to the fun.
We felt like Royalty for the entire week we were there..
We highly recommend this vacation to anyone..We are already thinking that our next vacation may be at the same place..We know any other place we go to in the future will be measured to our experiences in The Mayan Riviera and although it's our first experience of this kind, we really think we lucked out and found the place that others may hope to find next time..
Hope we haven't hyped it so much that you become dissapointed yourselves..Just do what we did..Go with certain expectations, but not overly high ones..Relax..Eat..Drink and have a great time..You are on vacation and you deserve it...
Thank you very much for stopping by..
Have a great holiday,
